Why Toji targeted Gojo and Riko Amanai

The confrontation begins with a protection mission. Teenagers Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto are assigned to escort Riko Amanai, the Star Plasma Vessel, to Master Tengen. The Time Vessel Association wants the merger stopped and hires Toji Fushiguro, an assassin known as the Sorcerer Killer.

Toji does not challenge Gojo at full strength. He places a bounty on Riko and lets multiple attackers exhaust Gojo’s Six Eyes and Limitless over several days. When the group finally reaches Jujutsu High, Gojo relaxes his technique for the first time since the mission began. That is the opening Toji has engineered.

This preparation matters. Toji’s Heavenly Restriction leaves him with no cursed energy, so Gojo cannot read him like an ordinary sorcerer. In exchange, Toji possesses extraordinary physical ability and sharpened senses. He also carries the Inverted Spear of Heaven, a cursed tool capable of nullifying active cursed techniques.

Gojo vs Toji, round one: how Toji won

In episode 27, Toji opens with a surprise attack and uses swarms of fly-head curses to disrupt Gojo’s vision. He alternates ordinary weapons with the Inverted Spear of Heaven, forcing Gojo to divide his attention between objects that carry cursed energy and an opponent who does not.

The strategy works. The spear bypasses Infinity, and Toji wounds Gojo repeatedly before stabbing him through the throat and forehead. The scene is not a simple power comparison. Toji wins because he understands the habits surrounding Gojo’s power and designs the entire mission to create one vulnerable moment.

With Gojo apparently dead, Toji reaches the Tombs of the Star, kills Riko and defeats Geto. At that point his assignment is complete. What he does not know is that his attack has forced Gojo to understand the one skill that had always escaped him.

How did Gojo survive Toji?

Gojo survives by mastering Reverse Cursed Technique while he is on the edge of death. Normal cursed energy is negative. Reverse Cursed Technique multiplies negative energy against itself to create positive energy, allowing a sorcerer to heal the body.

Gojo concentrates entirely on that process after Toji’s first decisive strike. Toji later recognizes his mistake: he should have destroyed Gojo’s head with the Inverted Spear of Heaven instead of finishing the attack with a conventional weapon. The gap is small, but it is enough for Gojo to repair the damage and return.

Toji wins the first fight. In doing so, he creates the version of Gojo he can no longer defeat.

Gojo’s awakening and “The Honored One”

When Gojo returns in episode 28, he is calm to the point of appearing detached. He can now heal himself, sustain the Limitless more effectively and use Cursed Technique Reversal: Red. The technical breakthrough is enormous, but the emotional tone is just as important.

Gojo’s “Throughout heaven and earth, I alone am the honored one” declaration marks absolute self-certainty. The phrase carries religious echoes, but within this scene it does not mean Gojo has become morally enlightened. He is experiencing the world through the clarity of power. Riko has died, yet for that brief moment he admits that he feels neither anger nor resentment.

That is why the awakening feels triumphant and unsettling at once. Gojo reaches a level no one around him can share. The fight confirms that he is the strongest, while quietly introducing the loneliness attached to that title.

How Gojo defeated Toji with Hollow Purple

Toji correctly prepares for Infinity, Blue and Red. His instincts still warn him that something is wrong, but pride keeps him in the fight. He wants to defeat the pinnacle of the jujutsu world, not only complete a contract.

Gojo combines the attraction of Blue and the repulsion of Red to produce Hollow Technique: Purple, an inherited application Toji does not know. The attack tears through Toji’s body and ends the rematch almost immediately.

Toji understands why he stayed. He had abandoned pride and the Zenin family long ago, yet in front of an awakened Gojo he tries to prove something to the jujutsu world that rejected him. His final defeat comes from the one impulse his usual professionalism would have told him to ignore.

Toji’s final words and Megumi

As he dies, Toji thinks of Megumi. He tells Gojo that his son will be sold to the Zenin family in a few years and leaves Gojo to decide what to do with that information. It is not a conventional apology, and Toji does not suddenly become a model father. The restraint is what makes the moment believable.

That final disclosure changes the future. Gojo later finds Megumi, blocks the planned sale and becomes the adult responsible for bringing him into the jujutsu world. Toji’s last act therefore reaches beyond his own death: the man he tried to kill becomes the person who gives his son another path.

Why Gojo vs Toji changes the story

The rematch creates the modern Satoru Gojo. After mastering Reverse Cursed Technique, he can automate more of his defensive technique and move toward becoming “the strongest” as the series knows him. But the same mission also accelerates Geto’s collapse.

Geto sees Riko killed, loses to a man with no cursed energy and watches non-sorcerers celebrate the death of the girl he was protecting. Gojo returns transformed, but the two friends no longer stand in the same emotional place. One rises beyond everyone around him; the other begins questioning why sorcerers should suffer for people who cannot see curses.

The fight is therefore not an isolated spectacle. It explains Gojo’s power, Megumi’s connection to him and the first widening distance between Gojo and Geto. Almost every part of the future is already present in its aftermath.

Why the Gojo vs Toji fight still matters

Gojo vs Toji works because victory changes hands twice. Toji proves that perfect information and discipline can bring down seemingly untouchable power. Gojo proves that surviving the right failure can permanently change the limits of that power.

Neither character leaves the fight untouched. Toji recovers a fragment of the pride he claimed to have abandoned. Gojo gains mastery but loses part of the ordinary closeness he once shared with Geto. The scene looks like the birth of a legend; underneath, it is also the beginning of a separation.
