Spoiler warningThis story discusses Uvogin’s death, the Phantom Troupe’s attack on the Yorknew auction and major events from the Yorknew City arc of Hunter x Hunter.

Chrollo’s requiem for Uvogin is one of Hunter x Hunter’s clearest warnings about the Phantom Troupe: the same people who treat the outside world as disposable can feel loyalty, grief and love with startling intensity inside the Spider.

At ANIMURA, we return to scenes where a character’s stillness says more than a speech. Chrollo does not mourn Uvogin with a funeral. He turns Yorknew City into a stage, sends the Troupe into battle and conducts the violence below as though it were music.

Quick answer

What episode is Chrollo’s requiem for Uvogin?

Chrollo’s requiem for Uvogin begins in Hunter x Hunter episode 51, “A × Brutal × Battlefield,” and the auction assault continues in episode 52, “Assault × And × Impact.” Uvogin is killed by Kurapika earlier, in episode 47. The requiem scene adapts material centered on manga chapter 97.

What happened to Uvogin?

Uvogin separates from the Phantom Troupe to hunt the chain user who captured him. That enemy is Kurapika, the last survivor of the Kurta Clan and a bodyguard for the Nostrade family. Their fight in episode 47 is not only a contest of strength. Kurapika built Chain Jail under a deadly restriction that allows him to use it only against members of the Phantom Troupe.

Once Uvogin is forced into Zetsu, his physical power cannot free him. Kurapika questions him about the Kurta massacre, but Uvogin refuses to betray the Spider. Kurapika’s Judgment Chain pierces his heart, and Uvogin dies without giving up information about the other members.

The Troupe does not witness the fight. What reaches them is absence: Uvogin fails to return, his fortune points toward death, and Chrollo understands that their strongest member has been killed. The loss turns their original auction theft into something more personal.

Why the Yorknew auction becomes a battlefield

The Phantom Troupe had already attacked the underground auction, only to find the vault empty. The Mafia’s Ten Dons respond by gathering armed forces and hiring professional assassins to protect the rescheduled sale. The Cemetery Building becomes the center of a conflict between the Mafia’s authority and the Spider’s refusal to be contained.

Chrollo also uses Neon Nostrade’s fortune-telling ability after stealing it with Skill Hunter. The fortunes confirm the danger around the Troupe and the death of a member. Instead of withdrawing, he reshapes the night around both revenge and strategy.

The official Japanese synopsis for episode 52 describes the Troupe entering the auction building to avenge their comrade. That motive matters: the massacre is not random chaos added to a robbery. It is the Phantom Troupe’s memorial for Uvogin.

What does Chrollo order the Phantom Troupe to do?

English subtitles and manga editions phrase Chrollo’s words differently. Some versions render the instruction as creating or playing a requiem for Uvogin; others emphasize causing havoc or making a grand performance. The reliable point is the shared context, not one supposedly universal English sentence: Chrollo dedicates the coming violence to Uvogin and unleashes the Troupe against the Mafia forces surrounding the auction.

That distinction is why the scene should not be reduced to a quote copied from memory. In the manga and the 2011 anime, Chrollo’s meaning is expressed by the sequence itself. Franklin opens fire on the forces outside, Feitan, Phinks, Machi and the others move through the battlefield, and Chrollo raises his hands like a conductor while the attack becomes Uvogin’s requiem.

For the Phantom Troupe, grief does not stop the mission. It becomes the rhythm of the attack.

How the Phantom Troupe massacre unfolds

Outside the Cemetery Building, fewer than ten attackers tear through a force of roughly two thousand Mafia guards and police. Franklin’s Double Machine Gun turns the street into a firing line, while the other Spiders break through the remaining defenses. Their small number makes the scale of the collapse feel even more unreal.

Inside, Chrollo confronts the assassins hired by the Ten Dons. He uses stolen Nen abilities, including Indoor Fish, with the same measured curiosity he brings to reading or conversation. The contrast is deliberate: the people around him are panicking, but Chrollo treats lethal abilities as objects to study and arrange.

The attack culminates in Chrollo’s confrontation with Zeno and Silva Zoldyck in episode 52. At the same time, Illumi completes Chrollo’s separate plan to eliminate the Ten Dons. Once the Dons are dead, the Zoldycks’ contract ends. The Troupe has not simply survived the Mafia’s retaliation; it has severed the organization at the top.

Why Chrollo stays calm during the violence

Chrollo’s composure is not evidence that Uvogin meant nothing to him. It is the form his grief takes. As leader, he turns emotion into direction for the group. He does not ask the Spider to pause. He gives every member a role and transforms mourning into collective action.

That calm also reflects how Chrollo separates insiders from outsiders. He can be thoughtful, gentle and genuinely affected by the death of a friend while showing almost no moral hesitation toward people beyond the Troupe. Hunter x Hunter does not present those qualities as a contradiction to solve. It makes the contradiction the center of his character.

Chrollo’s leadership is therefore intimate and terrifying at once. The members follow him because he understands what will bind them together. In this moment, the answer is not profit. It is loyalty to the member they lost.

What the requiem reveals about the Spider

The Phantom Troupe speaks of the Spider as something larger than any individual. A member may die and the group can continue. Yet Uvogin’s death shows that this principle does not make the members emotionally interchangeable. Nobunaga’s grief is open; Chrollo’s is ritualized; the others answer through action.

Their bond makes them more human without making them less brutal. That is what gives the scene its power. The Troupe is capable of loyalty, trust and sacrifice, but those feelings do not extend into empathy for the Mafia guards, auction staff or anyone caught in the assault.

The requiem also reverses the moral angle of the arc. Kurapika is hunting the people who destroyed his clan, yet the Troupe experiences him as the unseen killer of their friend. The audience can understand their grief without accepting the slaughter they choose as its expression.

How the requiem changes the Yorknew City arc

Before the massacre, the Mafia appears to control Yorknew through money, hired muscle and the Ten Dons. Episodes 51 and 52 expose how fragile that power is against organized Nen users. The auction ceases to be a protected criminal institution and becomes a trap whose owners cannot control it.

For Kurapika, the consequences are equally important. Killing Uvogin does not weaken the Spider into retreat. It draws the group together and escalates the danger around his employers, Gon and Killua. Revenge produces movement in both directions.

The attack also places Chrollo at the center of the arc. Until then, much of the Troupe’s threat is distributed among its members. The requiem shows the intelligence coordinating them: a leader who can mourn, improvise, steal abilities and dismantle the Mafia while appearing almost serene.

Why this is one of Chrollo’s defining scenes

Chrollo’s most memorable quality is not raw aggression. It is the distance between what he feels and how he appears. Standing above Yorknew, he looks less like a fighter than a conductor. The city’s violence becomes an arrangement he can hear, shape and dedicate.

That image contains the whole Phantom Troupe: art and cruelty, loyalty and indifference, individual grief and devotion to the Spider. It explains why Chrollo can remain quiet without seeming empty. His emotions are present, but he expresses them at the scale of a criminal organization.

The requiem endures because it refuses to make the Troupe simple. Uvogin’s death matters to them. The lives they take in response do not. Both truths are necessary to understand why Chrollo is compelling—and why he remains dangerous.
