How Does Light Yagami Die? Why Ryuk Kills Kira

Light and Ryuk Death Note Magic Mug by ANIMURA

Spoiler warning: This story discusses the ending of Death Note, including the final confrontation, Light Yagami’s identity as Kira and his death.

Light Yagami spends Death Note trying to stand above the notebook’s rules. He uses investigators, criminals, allies and even shinigami as pieces in a world he intends to judge. In the final episode, that structure collapses in minutes. The man who made thousands of lives depend on a written name becomes a name in Ryuk’s notebook.

The ending is not a last-minute betrayal. Ryuk told Light from the beginning that he was not his ally and that, when the time came, he would be the one to write Light’s name. Episode 37 turns that warning into the story’s final judgment.

How does Light Yagami die in Death Note?

Light Yagami dies in Death Note episode 37, “New World.” Near proves that Light is Kira after Teru Mikami’s notebook fails to kill anyone at the warehouse meeting. When Light tries to use a hidden scrap of the Death Note, Matsuda shoots him. Light escapes while badly wounded, but Ryuk writes “Light Yagami” in his own Death Note. Forty seconds later, Light dies of a heart attack.

  • Immediate cause: Ryuk writes Light’s name in the Death Note, causing a heart attack

Before the warehouse: Light’s final plan

By the end of the series, Light believes he has recreated the advantage that allowed him to defeat L. Near’s SPK and the Japanese task force will meet at the Yellow Box warehouse. Teru Mikami, acting as X-Kira, will use the real Death Note to write every name except Light’s. When everyone else dies, Light will stand revealed only to people who can no longer accuse him.

The plan depends on complete control: Mikami must act exactly as Light expects, the notebook Near’s team altered must be a decoy, and no one can discover the real book hidden in Mikami’s bank deposit box. But Mello’s kidnapping of Kiyomi Takada forces Mikami to act independently. That movement exposes the real notebook, giving Near’s team the opening to replace it.

This is the first crack in Light’s idea of himself. He has always treated loyalty as predictable behavior. Mikami’s devotion is so absolute that he acts to protect Kira’s plan—and that unscripted act is exactly what makes the plan visible.

Near exposes Kira

At the warehouse, Mikami writes the names he can see and waits. Light waits too. He believes the forty-second rule will erase every opponent at once. Then the minute passes and nobody dies.

Near has Mikami arrested and explains that the notebook he brought is not capable of killing them. The real book was found and replaced after Mikami’s unauthorized visit to the bank. Near also makes clear that Mello’s action created the chance to see through Light’s strategy; the final victory belongs to a chain of people Light underestimated, not to a lone genius imitating L.

Mikami’s notebook contains everyone’s name except Light Yagami. That omission is the simple, physical proof Light can no longer talk around. For years, Light survived by keeping suspicion separated from evidence. Near finally places both in the same room.

Light confesses—and tries one last trick

Once exposed, Light abandons the innocent son and dedicated investigator he performed for the task force. He declares that he is Kira and argues that the world needs him: crime has fallen, war has receded, and fear of judgment has produced order.

The speech reveals the central conflict of Death Note with unusual clarity. Light calls the result justice because he has made himself the only person allowed to define it. Near rejects that claim. However intelligent Light may be, he is still a killer using a supernatural weapon and deciding that disagreement makes other people disposable.

Light then reaches for the fragment of the Death Note hidden inside his watch and begins writing Near’s name. Matsuda sees the move and shoots him before he can finish. When Light keeps trying, Matsuda fires again. The task force restrains Matsuda, but the relationship between the men is already destroyed: the father Matsuda admired died trusting Light, and Light has just treated that trust as another tool.

Why does Ryuk kill Light?

Ryuk kills Light because their relationship was never a partnership. He dropped the notebook out of boredom and stayed to watch what a remarkable human would do with it. He helped when something interested him or when an apple was involved, but he never accepted Light’s morality and never promised rescue.

At the end, Light is wounded, exposed and fleeing. The Kira game Ryuk came to watch is over. Ryuk understands that, if Light is captured, he may spend years imprisoned. Ryuk has no interest in waiting beside him. He writes Light’s name himself, fulfilling the condition that has existed since their first meeting.

Ryuk does not defeat Kira in a moral duel. He closes the game whose ending he warned Light about from the start.

This matters because it prevents Light from turning even his death into proof of divine status. Ryuk is not an executioner serving Near’s justice. He is a shinigami following his own nature. Light’s final judge is the one being he could never recruit into his vision of the new world.

Did Matsuda kill Light?

Matsuda’s bullets stop Light’s attempt to write Near’s name and leave him badly wounded, but the anime identifies the Death Note as the final cause. Ryuk writes Light Yagami’s name and specifies a heart attack; the rule takes effect after forty seconds.

So both actions are essential to the sequence, but they are not interchangeable. Matsuda prevents another murder. Ryuk ends Light’s life. Saying only that Light was shot misses the story’s deliberate symmetry: Kira dies by the same mechanism he used to control other deaths.

Light’s final run and the image of L

The anime gives Light a final escape through the city. As he runs, wounded and stripped of the authority he performed in the warehouse, the series contrasts him with the younger student who first found the notebook. For a moment, the distance between who Light was and what Kira made of him becomes visible.

Ryuk watches from above and writes the name. Light collapses on a staircase as his heart stops. In his final moments, he sees an image of L. The series does not present this as a literal supernatural return; it works as a final visual reckoning with the opponent whose shadow Light never truly escaped.

The location is equally precise. Light dreamed of standing at the top of a new world. He dies midway on a staircase, neither ascending to godhood nor returning to the ordinary life he abandoned.

How the anime ending differs from the manga

Both versions end with Ryuk writing Light’s name, but the staging is different. The anime lets Light flee the warehouse and gives his death a quieter, reflective visual sequence. In manga chapter 107, the confrontation is harsher and more contained; Light’s desperation is displayed in front of the people he deceived.

The difference changes the emotional texture, not the canon outcome. Near exposes Kira, the final plan fails, and Ryuk is the one who writes Light Yagami’s name. Chapter 108 then moves into the world after Kira, while the anime closes on Light’s death in episode 37.

Why Kira’s ending matters

Light begins with a real observation: the world contains cruelty, fear and systems that fail to protect people. His fatal step is deciding that this gives him the right to become an unaccountable system of punishment. Every compromise then becomes necessary because the person defining justice must protect himself at any cost.

The final episode dismantles that fantasy through ordinary human limits. Mikami makes an independent decision. Mello takes a risk Light did not predict. Near trusts evidence created by collaboration. Matsuda reacts not like a disposable subordinate but like a betrayed person. Light loses because other people never were the controllable pieces he believed them to be.

Ryuk’s last action completes the irony. Light wanted the notebook to place him outside humanity. Instead, it makes him subject to the simplest Death Note fact of all: once a name is written, power, intelligence and explanation cannot negotiate with the countdown.

Light Yagami’s death questions, answered

What episode does Light Yagami die in?

Light dies in Death Note episode 37, “New World,” the final episode of the anime.

Who actually kills Light?

Ryuk kills Light by writing “Light Yagami” in his Death Note. Matsuda shoots and incapacitates Light first, but Ryuk’s notebook causes the fatal heart attack.

Why didn’t Ryuk help Light escape?

Ryuk was an observer, not Light’s loyal ally. Once Kira was exposed and the game was over, Ryuk chose not to wait through Light’s imprisonment and fulfilled his original warning.

Did Light lose because of Mikami?

Mikami’s unexpected bank visit exposed the real notebook, but the failure is not his alone. Light built a plan that required another person to behave with perfect predictability and did not account for Mello’s intervention.

Does Light see L before he dies?

In the anime, Light sees an image of L in his final moments. It is presented as visual and emotional closure, not proof that L literally returns.

Is Light’s death different in the manga?

The core outcome is the same: Near exposes him and Ryuk writes his name. The manga keeps the death closer to the warehouse confrontation, while the anime gives Light a final escape and staircase scene.
