Spoiler warningThis story explains Hunter x Hunter (2011) episodes 122–126 and the end of the fight between Netero and Meruem, including Netero’s death. It stops at the Poor Man’s Rose explosion and avoids what happens to Meruem afterward.

Netero’s strongest technique does not stop Meruem. The damage that matters comes from a plan he has carried inside his own chest since before the fight began.

Netero, the Chairman of the Hunter Association, does not walk into this fight to negotiate. He walks into it looking for an opponent he can finally stop holding back against, and over episodes 122 to 126 he gives that opponent everything he has. It is still not enough, and what he does next is the reason the scene stays with people.

This is the moment behind ANIMURA’s Isaac Netero collection: not the clash of techniques, but the instant after the strongest one fails, when Netero stops trying to win the exchange and starts finishing the plan.

What Netero is carrying into the fight

In episode 122, Netero and Meruem face each other at a weapons-testing ground. Meruem would rather talk than fight: he describes the world he plans to build, offers to spare Netero’s life if the Chairman withdraws and sits down to discuss it. Netero refuses. He attacks with his 100-Type Guanyin Bodhisattva, the Nen statue that strikes in time with his hand movements, and the blow does no damage. Meruem sits down again and insists on words.

So Netero changes the terms. He tells Meruem that the Chimera Ant Queen spoke the King’s name as she died, and he offers to reveal it if Meruem can make him admit defeat. Meruem accepts, and the fight begins.

By episode 125, Netero is attacking with the Ninety-Ninth Hand, which breaks the ground open and drops both fighters into an underground tomb that Netero says will be Meruem’s grave. As the King prepares to strike back, Netero says he is grateful for the chance to have met him.

What happens in episode 126

Episode 126 is where the fight ends. Meruem has learned Netero’s rhythm: Netero has to bring his hands together before each strike. He uses that opening to tear off Netero’s right leg and then his left arm.

Netero answers by calling up his Zero Hand behind the King. It grips Meruem and fires everything Netero has left, and Netero is left aged and drained. Meruem walks out with only superficial damage. Even so, the King tells Netero that humans will have a place in the world he rules. Netero’s reply is the first sign of what is coming: Meruem is not alone, and he should not underestimate humans. Then, as agreed, Netero gives Meruem his name.

The moment the plan appears

What follows takes only moments. Netero, close to death, releases a surge of aura and tells Meruem that he knows nothing of the malice in the human heart. For the first time in the fight, the King is afraid. Netero drives two fingers into his own heart.

The Poor Man’s Rose, a bomb placed inside Netero’s chest to go off when his heart stops, detonates. Meruem realizes he has been in checkmate the whole time and tries to flee, and the explosion destroys the tomb and the plain around it. In the manga, Netero also tells Meruem that if Hell exists, they will meet there.

This article stops here. What the Rose does to Meruem belongs to later episodes, and explaining it here would spoil them.

Why the failure of Zero Hand matters

What follows is interpretation, not canon.

Zero Hand is Netero’s most powerful attack, and it does only superficial damage. The episode does not treat that as a defeat for Netero. It treats it as the point where the fight changes shape: once the technique he is known for has failed, the only thing left is the plan he never needed to show.

The Rose does not make Netero stronger than Meruem. It turns the fight into a different kind of contest. Meruem can read speed, strength and rhythm. He cannot read a man who has already decided what his heart will be used for.

He loses a leg, an arm and most of his strength, and the last move was still prepared before the first blow.

That is also what separates this death from a heroic last stand. Netero is not overwhelmed, and he is not lucky. His fighting style is built on prayer, and in episode 126 he still finishes with an arm gone.

Doom, worn on the chest

The Isaac Netero Burgundy Oversized Anime T-Shirt keeps the front to one word, DOOM, set in thorned, rose-wrapped lettering across the chest. The back carries the rest of the scene: a rose-wrapped skull above a meditating martial artist, with Netero’s face at the base and Japanese script running down both sides. Printed on burgundy interlock fabric, the roses and the meditating figure point to the two things the moment turns on: Netero’s prayer and the Rose.

Netero’s death questions, answered

What episode does Netero die in?

Netero dies in Hunter x Hunter (2011) episode 126, “Zero × and × Rose,” which first aired on April 23, 2014. The manga covers the end of the fight in chapters 297 and 298.

What is the Poor Man’s Rose?

It is the bomb Netero carries in his chest. It is built to go off once his heart stops, so he sets it off by driving two fingers into his own heart. The manga describes it as cheap to make and responsible for millions of deaths, and says that an international treaty banning it was rejected by most countries.

Why doesn’t Zero Hand beat Meruem?

Zero Hand grips Meruem and fires all of Netero’s remaining aura, but Meruem comes out with only superficial damage while Netero is left aged and weakened. That failure is what pushes the fight toward the Rose.

Why does Meruem fight Netero at all?

Meruem would rather talk. Netero offers him the name the Chimera Ant Queen spoke as she died, on one condition: Meruem has to make him admit defeat. Meruem accepts, and Netero gives him the name in episode 126.

What does Netero say before he dies?

In the manga, he tells Meruem that he is not alone and should not underestimate humans, that Meruem knows nothing of the malice in the human heart, and that if Hell exists, they will meet there. English dialogue here is paraphrased, not quoted.

What happens to Meruem after the Rose?

That is outside this article’s spoiler boundary. Episode 127 begins with the aftermath, and Meruem’s own ending is covered in a separate ANIMURA story.
