Itachi’s Death in Naruto Shippuden: Episode 138, the Final Touch to Sasuke & What It Means
Itachi’s last act is not an attack. It is two fingers, a forehead and a promise he can no longer keep.
Sasuke has spent years chasing one outcome: Itachi on the ground, defeated by him. In episode 138 he gets close to it, but the moment does not feel like winning. Itachi reaches toward him, and what Sasuke has every reason to expect as the end of the fight turns out to be a gesture from their childhood.
That gesture is the moment behind ANIMURA’s Itachi & Sasuke – Final Touch Magic Mug, and it is the reason the Itachi Uchiha and Sasuke Uchiha pages keep returning to it: a forehead touch that carries memory, sacrifice and brotherhood.
What is Itachi’s final touch to Sasuke?
Itachi’s final touch is the two-finger poke to Sasuke’s forehead right before he dies. It happens in Naruto Shippuden episode 138, “The End” (manga chapters 391–393), and it echoes a gesture from the brothers’ childhood. Itachi has just sealed Orochimaru and spent the last of his strength; instead of finishing the fight, he apologizes, touches Sasuke’s forehead and collapses beside him.

Where the brothers are in episode 138
By episode 138, the fight at the Uchiha hideout has reached its final technique. Sasuke uses the heat of his Great Dragon Fire and Itachi’s Amaterasu to create storm clouds, then channels the lightning into Kirin, which destroys the hideout. Itachi survives only because of his complete Susanoo.
Both brothers are close to empty. Itachi is weakened and coughing blood, and Sasuke is drained after Kirin. The episode is no longer about who has the stronger technique; it is about who can still stand.
What happens in episode 138
Then the fight changes shape. The suppressed remnant of Orochimaru breaks free through Sasuke’s cursed seal using the Eight Branches Technique. Itachi cuts down the serpents, uses the Sword of Totsuka to seal Orochimaru away and removes Sasuke’s cursed seal. The effort drains what is left of his chakra and reduces his Susanoo to its basic form.
Now nothing stands between the brothers. Itachi moves toward the exhausted Sasuke, and Sasuke has every reason to expect an attack. Itachi speaks his final words, touches two fingers to Sasuke’s forehead, smiles and dies. Sasuke is left beside the body.
His last words are an apology: there will be no “next time.” The touch is how he says it.
The words refer to a promise from their childhood, the “some other time” that Itachi once gave Sasuke and can no longer keep.
Why the touch matters
The forehead poke is not a new gesture. It recalls how Itachi treated Sasuke when they were children, so the last thing Itachi does is return to something older than the feud.
It also does more than it appears to. The touch has a function Sasuke cannot see in the moment, and the story explains it in the chapters that follow. This article leaves that explanation to them.
What changes immediately
Sasuke is left exhausted beside Itachi’s body, and he is confused: Itachi looked as if he was about to win. Zetsu, who observes the fight, remarks that Itachi fought unusually poorly. The manga marks the aftermath with chapter 394, titled “Sasuke’s Victory,” but the title is not the answer. The explanation arrives in the chapters after it.
What matters for this moment is what the scene leaves unfinished. Sasuke came to end a fight, and Itachi’s last act gives him a gesture instead of a verdict.
Why the gesture lands the way it does
What follows is interpretation, not canon.
Itachi’s death scene is built on a refusal. A fight that has been about eyes, power and revenge ends with two fingers on a forehead. The poke recalls childhood, so the moment treats the brothers’ history as more important than the battle that has just ended.
The strain of the fight and Itachi’s illness end his life, not a final blow from Sasuke. He dies close enough to reach his brother, which is why the scene reads as a farewell and not a defeat.
That is also why ANIMURA’s mug is built around the touch rather than around the battle. The techniques disappear after the scene; the gesture is what remains.

The final touch, revealed by heat
The Itachi & Sasuke – Final Touch Magic Mug wraps the brothers’ story around the mug in restrained dark tones, sketch-inspired linework and subtle red accents, moving from childhood memories to Sasuke’s journey and the forehead touch itself. Its heat-reactive surface reveals the artwork when a hot drink is added.
